VAF, also known as Vidar Anker Filion, emerges as a key figure in Oslo’s underground scene, blending experimental electronic music with fine art, performance, and a deep exploration of the occult. With a rich history of over fifty releases, Vidar is known from boundary-pushing bands like Deathcrush, Årabrot, Oilskin and Norwegian Noise Orchestra amongst others, and has toured the world delivering intense, visceral performances. Drawing from his experiences and occult practices, VAF’s music is both a journey and a reflection on the self, inviting listeners to dive into the strange and the unknown.

VAF mixes experimental electronic music with fine art and performances. Themes being worked on are the fool, emptiness, outsiders, and the occult, Thelema in particular. The new album aims to give the listener a journey through the mind. The inner conversation you may have when lying on the floor in a room next to a party questioning your existence.

Recorded and mixed at Transgressive House, with additional mixing at Atelièr Nord in Oslo, Nattens Skapningar / Digitalis Purpurea reflects a marriage of sonic exploration and conceptual depth. Mastered by noise legend Lasse Marhaug, the album resonates with fans of Coil, Klaus Schulze, and Lustmord, offering an auditory experience that is both experimental and profoundly meditative.

The album Nattens Skapningar / Digitalis Purpurea focuses on everything and everyone you may meet after the dark has set in and society changes (Nattens Skapningar = Creatures of the Night /
Digitalis Purpurea = Foxglove). Meeting the mentally ill, hookers, and drug addicts on their path of Kephera searching for Heliopolis. It also winks at the song Creature of the Night by the rock group KISS, which has inspired a lot of the making of this album. Digitalis Purpurea is a medicine plant that is still in use for the human heart. It points at the heart in the night trying to balance the beat of the love we all search for. The need for a symbolic heart medicine has been a part of Vidar’s life for years.

Nattens Skapningar / Digitalis Purpurea is not just an album; it is an invitation to step into the unknown. For those who dare to explore, it offers a world where the night reveals hidden truths, and where the journey of self-discovery is as intoxicating as it is unsettling. As VAF embarks on this new chapter, expect to see live performances in the near future, each one a unique manifestation of the artist’s ongoing exploration into the void.

While the concept of VAF is still in its early stages, the artist has already begun to share this immersive journey with the world through select live performances. These include unique art performances, sound installations, rituals, and visual work as part of the Temple of Burot, the gallery White Box KHIO, and at venues such as Kafé Hærverk and Blitz. VAF’s live shows are an extension of the album’s themes, creating a visceral environment for listeners to experience the alchemical transformations of sound, art, and the occult.
